I thought it might go on forever, it was very frustrating and annoying having hives every day, every meal, every time I brushed my teeth or washed my hair. Disruptive is an understatement. I developed a fear of eating foods (not that it stopped me!) , not knowing how my body would react. The plate had become very boring with no foods that had bright colors (I was very reactive to these) and very little in the spice category as I was reactive to these.
It started late in 2012, or maybe early 2013, its hard to pinpoint because it started as just itchiness which was pretty easy to ignore. But then it got worse, more itching and definite hives that would come and go depending on what I ate. Or so I thought. Once the hives pass the 6 week mark they are called “chronic”. I began researching to see what the causes of chronic hives might be and found many different dietary treatments with varying degrees of self-reported effectiveness. Coincidentally, I was in the middle of my certification to become a Certified LEAP (Lifestyle Education and Performance) Therapist (CLT) for Mediator Release Testing (MRT), a type of food sensitivity testing that I now offer through my practice along with food sensitivity counseling. So I got myself tested. I was also tested for many different autoimmune illnesses and vitamin/mineral levels. This was insisted upon by the physician I saw and it made sense to rule out things like Lupus and Epstein Barr. By this time I had developed quite a ruddy complexion, looking sunburned in the middle of winter.
My MRT results came in and I hired my LEAP mentor to take me through the MRT protocol. This was extremely helpful in understanding the process my clients go through when they are tested so I now feel very equipped to assist them through the full protocol. And following the protocol helped me a little but not that much. I was even reacting to foods that the test said I wasn’t reactive to. I thought it was because the MRT doesn’t test for histamine levels and I seemed to react to a lot of those foods (tomato, pineapple, banana, avocado, berries etc). I had myself tested for the ability to process histamine and found this to be normal. And continued researching.
Many people with chronic hives have good results from acupuncture. I hate needles but was willing to try just about anything. I was 5 months in at this point. After 10 or so acupuncture treatments I decided that it hurt and wasn’t helping much. Any relaxation benefit was cancelled out by the needle anxiety.
I tried various supplements that are recommended to reduce histamine levels and reactions such as vitamin C and Quercitin. These helped reduce the severity of reactions but did not stop them. I continued researching and also saw a physician who thought I had hypothyroid and that chronic hives often came along with that. I had also read about the thyroid and hives connection so I agreed to try thyroid medication. This helped with the daytime sleepiness but not with the hives. Not at all.
By about 9 months in I was so frustrated that I saw a mainstream allergist. I had avoided it up to this point because I knew that medication would be all that was offered, and that medication might take care of the symptoms but would not tell me why this was happening. I did have some respite from the symptoms with a daily allergy medication but in my heart I knew that the medication was just masking the symptoms and that the hives weren’t going away.
I tried energy work. All kinds. I figured that I had tried to address the problem on a physical level and that maybe it was just something deep within me on an energetic level and I didn’t know how to get to it. But the hives continued.
I had had the hives for a year and 4 months. I thought I had done everything and read everything but maybe I had missed something, so I asked a woman I know who recommended NAET. She had been to someone in our area who did this treatment and it had worked for her. I remembered NAET and went home to look it up. I had forgotten the rest of her information, the person in my area that does the work. But when I went to the NAET practitioner web site, there was a name I recognized and not only because she had told me about him, but also because he was the husband of someone I knew. Small world.
What is NAET? The following is from the NAET web site:
NAET® was discovered by Dr. Devi S. Nambudripad in November of 1983. Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Techniques, also known as NAET, are a non-invasive, drug free, natural solution to alleviate allergies of all types and intensities using a blend of selective energy balancing, testing and treatment procedures from acupuncture/acupressure, allopathy, chiropractic, nutritional, and kinesiological disciplines of medicine.
One allergen is treated at a time. If you are not severely immune deficient, you may need just one treatment to desensitize one allergen. A person with mild to moderate amount of allergies may take about 15-20 office visits to desensitize 15-20 food and environmental allergens.
Basic essential nutrients are treated during the first few visits. Chemicals, environmental allergens, vaccinations, immunizations, etc. are treated after completing about ten basic essential nutrients. NAET can successfully alleviate adverse reactions to egg, milk, peanuts, penicillin, aspirin, mushrooms, shellfish, latex, grass, ragweed, flowers, perfume, animal dander, animal epithelial, make-up, chemicals, cigarette smoke, pathogens, heat, cold, other environmental agents. It may take several office visits to desensitize a severe allergen.
NAET is available all over the world. Over 12,000 licensed medical practitioners have been trained in NAET procedures and are practicing all over the world. To help you find a NAET specialist, the names of the trained practitioners have been listed on our website under the Find a Practitioner section. We ask that you browse the NAET website for more information on NAET and use our practitioner locator to find a NAET practitioner near you.
All NAET practitioners in the practitioner locator have been trained by Dr. Nambudripad, but it is not possible for us to track each practitioner’s performance. Please understand that these trained NAET practitioners are independent medical practitioners, some may be doing various treatment procedures other than NAET.
After my first NAET treatment I had some immediate lessening of reactions. I never took another antihistamine the whole time I was treated with NAET. And like concentric circles my symptoms reduced and reduced after each visit until one day I realized I hadn’t had symptoms for a couple of weeks. The whole process took about 8-10 weeks of 2 treatments a week. I am still amazed. And so very grateful. To Dr Nambudripad for developing this treatment, to Dr Perry Wolk-Weiss of the Get Well Center in Bound Brook, NJ for treating my chronic hives, to the woman who told me about NAET, and to the universe for answering my prayer for a person I had not yet discovered on my own.
As for MRT food sensitivity testing, I am getting amazing results with my clients. Nine out of ten are improving substantially by going through the MRT testing and diet protocol. And for those that don’t, they may get a referral for NAET.
